Biographical notes

Dr. Federica Cosentino is an expert scientist in numerical models in the laboratory of Cardiovascular Tissue Engineering at Ri.MED Foundation. In 2016, she received her MS in Civil Engineering from the University of Palermo (Italy). In 2021, Dr. Cosentino earned her PhD in Technology and Science for Human Health at the University of Palermo. During her PhD program, she was awarded a competitive scholarship, the Ernst Mach scholarship, founded by the Austrian Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Research to spent 10 months at the Institute of Biomechanics, Graz University of Technology in Austria.

Scientific activity

Dr. Cosentino’s research focuses on developing digital image analysis tools to characterize native and engineered tissues and to perform a qualitative and quantitative histological assessment. These tools facilitate a mechanistic understanding of how the material microstructure translates into a specific mechanical response and allow improved control over biomaterial structure-function.

The software developed by the Cardiovascular Tissue Engineering group include: Blood Vessel Detection (BVD) Algorithm (quantification and spatial distribution of blood vessels in the explant sections), cell growth and morphology characterization and quantification, collagen-rich areas quantification, explant morphology and microstructure characterization. Her skills include: numerical simulations (ABAQUS, FLUENT), programming (Matlab, Python), mechanical testing (uniaxial test, biaxial test), image analysis and processing (Scanning Electron Microscopy, confocal microscopy, multiphoton microscopy MP, optical microscopy, Matlab, Python).
