BIOSKETCH

Filippo received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Biotechology and Molecular Medicine from the University of Palermo. In 2011, he obtained a Ph.D in Technologies of Biologically Active Substances from the same university. His Ph.D thesis described a hydrogel for the controlled release of antibiotics, which was subsequently patented and commercialized by Novagenit srl. Starting from 2011, he was a post-doctoral researcher at the University of Palermo. During this time, he was under contract with Nemesys Ltd, and developed a hyaluronic acid-based hydrogel for the treatment of celiac disease, which was also patented. He later contributed to a collaborative PON project with Lima Corporate, working on the development of biphasis scaffolds for bone and cartilage regeneration. In January 2023, Filippo joined the Cell Therapy group of Fondazione Ri.MED as a Scientist in Polymeric Systems.

SCIENTIFIC ACTIVITIES

Filippo’s research activity is centered on the design, synthesis, and characterization of polymeric systems for the controlled or sustained delivery of therapeutic agents to target organs. Specifically, Filippo is either implementing or establishing in vitro approaches to characterize the extracellular vesicle-laden polymers. Filippo employs several methods, such as chemical synthesis, proton NMR, affinity chromatography, size exclusion chromatography, and rheological analyses. These activities are carried in collaboration with the Lab of Biocompatible Polymers (University of Palermo).
