Biographical notes

Dr. Albert Comelli is currently Senior Scientist in Biomedical Imaging at the Ri.MED Foundation, Palermo, Italy. In 2013 he received the Combined B.Sc’s/M.Sc’s Degree in Computer Science at the University of Catania with a thesis entitled “3D Visualization for Endoscopic Exploration and Telecontrol”, in 2020 the PhD in Computer Engineering at the University of Palermo discussing a thesis entitled “Image Processing, 3D Segmentation and Machine Learning Models to Classify and Delineate Tumor Volumes to Support Medical Decision” and in 2021 he received  FELASA (n. F023 / 09) for Functions A, B, C and D accredited by the Ministry of Health, pursuant to Legislative Decree 5 August 2021 in Laboratory Animal Science (It covered the species: mice and rats and included the additional task specific modules: 20, 21, 22). Hi is Researcher affiliate long term at the Laboratory of Computational Computer Vision (LCCV) at School of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, Georgia, USA, at the Institute of Bioimaging and Molecular Physiology (IBFM-CNR), Palermo, Italy and at the National Institute of Nuclear Physics (INFN), Catania, Italy. 

In 2012 he carried out his thesis at the School of Engineering and Technology, University of Hertfordshire (UK) where he also obtained the title of MSc Projects. In 2014 he was awarded a research grant at the Department of Biopathology and Medical-Forensic Biotechnology (DIBIMEF) Radiology, University of Palermo (Italy) entitled “Techniques of intelligent processing and analysis of heterogeneous data in the medical field”.

In 2015 he was awarded a research grant at the Department of Biopathology and Medical Biotechnology (DIBIMED) Radiology, University of Palermo (Italy) entitled “An Intelligent Framework for Clinical Big Data Analysis for Decision Support in the Breast Disease Diagnosis Process” .

In 2017 he was awarded a research contract at the Complex Operative Unit of Obstetrics and Gynecology Arnas Civico Palermo, Italy. In 2017 he won a permanent contract at Demetrix SRL for the development of medical decision support systems through data analysis and medical images through the implementation of artificial intelligence, machine learning and deep learning algorithm systems. In 2020 he taught at the PhD in Information and Communication Technologies (Biomedical Image Processing and Analysis) at the University of Palermo. In addition, from 2014 to 2018 he held courses in Information Processing Systems at the School of Medicine and Surgery at the University of Palermo in the following degree courses: 1) Biomedical Laboratory Techniques; 2) Obstetrics; 3) Orthoptic and Ophthalmological Assistance.

Scientifical activity

His research interests include the development of algorithms for the analysis and classification of biomedical data and images, the identification of new biomarkers through the extraction and selection of radiomic features from images, the implementation of machine learning systems and deep learning for 3D tumor volume segmentation and tissue classification to support medical diagnosis, to develop customized predictive and / or prognostic models to support medical decision making in patients undergoing different methods imaging, management, maintenance and development of experimental protocols for the acquisition of nuclear magnetic resonance (MRI) sequences, computed tomography (CT), positron emission tomography (PET), ultrasound, in vivo imaging system (IVIS), cell images, histological images in clinical and preclinical studies.

He is tutor of 10 innovative PhD students and one RTDA on with industrial characterization supported with PON R&I 2014-2020 University and Research (MIUR) funds, and INPS Research funds. 

He is the author of over 75 scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals and international conference proceedings.
