Biographical notes

Dr. Elisa Lanzalaco obtained her Bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Engineering (Biomaterials curriculum) in 2019 and her Master’s degree in Biomedical Engineering (Biomechanics curriculum) in 2021 from the University of Palermo, Italy.

She then pursued a PhD funded jointly by the University of Palermo and Fondazione Ri.MED, working within the Tissue Engineering group led by Prof. A. D’Amore and contributing to the BIOMITRAL project.

During her PhD, she spent five months as a visiting researcher at the McGowan Institute for Regenerative Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh (USA).

She currently works as a Scientist in Computational and Experimental Cardiovascular Biomechanics at Fondazione Ri.MED, within the Tissue Engineering laboratory.

Scientific activity

Her research focuses on integrating numerical simulations with experimental validation, combining in-silico and in-vitro approaches to study complex cardiovascular systems.

Dr. Lanzalaco has strong experience in finite element modeling (FEM) using Abaqus and Abaqus-Python scripting, developing automated workflows to improve and streamline simulation processes. She also has expertise in 3D modeling, reverse engineering, and 3D printing, and contributed to the design of a custom-made pulse duplicator for testing heart valves during her research stay abroad.

Main skills

  • Numerical simulations: Abaqus, Abaqus Python, ANSYS Fluent
  • CAD modeling: SOLIDWORKS, Solid Edge, Autodesk Inventor, Rhinoceros 3D
  • Mechanical testing: uniaxial and biaxial testing
  • Programming: MATLAB, Python
