Naples, 12 September 2025 – Giulio Superti-Furga, internationally renowned molecular biologist and Scientific Director of Fondazione Ri.MED, has been awarded the prestigious “Italian Bilateral Scientific Cooperation Award”, granted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MAECI) to Italian scientists who have made significant contributions to the advancement of science and technology while conducting their research abroad.

The official award ceremony took place today in Naples, within the framework of the Conference of Science Attachés “Science Diplomacy in Support of Growth”, a key event highlighting the strategic role of research and Italian science diplomacy in fostering national growth.

In addition to his role at Ri.MED, Superti-Furga also serves as Scientific Director of CeMM – the Research Center for Molecular Medicine of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. He was nominated by the Italian Embassy in Vienna as one of Europe’s leading figures in molecular biology and systems medicine, with a scientific output of extraordinary international impact, over 40 patents, and the founding of 5 biotech start-ups. The award was shared ex aequo with Elisabetta Barberio, a leading scientist in the field of particle physics.

The award recognizes Superti-Furga’s outstanding contribution to strengthening international cooperation in science and technology, as well as his continued commitment to research and to building bridges between institutions and scientific communities. Designated as the future Director of the new Ri.MED Research Center currently under construction in the province of Palermo, Superti-Furga strongly believes that research must transcend borders:

“It is a tremendous honor for me to receive this award at the very moment when the Ri.MED Research Center project, which I will have the privilege of directing, is becoming a reality in Sicily. Building networks of collaboration with other countries is essential, but our goal is even more ambitious: to create a truly global center capable of attracting talent from all over the world. Our aspiration is for Ri.MED to become a beacon, able to guide and inspire diverse people and initiatives – from research to start-ups, from the health industry to food and wine, from cultural tourism to health tourism. All of this will be driven by an innovative approach inspired by the One Health vision, integrating health, society, and the environment.”
