Cenni biografici

Dr. Riccardo Varrica obtained his master’s degree in molecular biology and health at the University of Palermo in 2024, graduating with honors and a special mention. During his academic journey, he deepened his knowledge in molecular genetics and cytogenetic methodologies, developing a strong interest in the study of rare genetic diseases and RNA-based therapies. His master’s thesis focused on the efficacy of Translational Readthrough Inducing Drugs (TRIDs) in recovering protein expression in mouse models with nonsense mutations, contributing to the research on new therapeutic strategies.

In 2024, he started his PhD in Technologies and Sciences for Human Health at the University of Palermo, in co-supervision with the Advanced Data Analysis group of the Ri.MED Foundation, focusing on the use of AntiSense Oligonucleotides (ASOs) and TRIDs for the treatment of genetic diseases.

Attività Scientifica

Dr. Varrica’s research focuses on the development of innovative ASO-based therapies for rare genetic diseases, with particular attention to Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) and Hutchinson-Gilford Progeria Syndrome (HGPS). His project is situated within the context of precision medicine, aiming to develop personalized therapies for rare genetic diseases, offering new therapeutic hopes for patients with limited treatment options.
