Cenni biografici

Elena Buscemi is currently a PhD student at the Ri.MED Foundation in the Cardiovascular Tissue Engineering laboratory. In 2021, she obtained her Bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Palermo, and in 2023 she received her Master’s degree in Biomedical Engineering, with a specialization in Biomechanics, from the Politecnico di Torino. In November 2024, she started her PhD program at the Ri.MED Foundation under the supervision of Dr. Di Giuseppe. Her research project is part of the research line “Numerical Models for the Mechanics and Tissue Growth of Native and Engineered Tissues (NET-MTG)”.

Attività Scientifica

Her research activity integrates both experimental and computational approaches. From an experimental perspective, the project involves the fabrication of polymeric scaffolds using the melt electrowriting technique, intended for the culture of cardiac cells, with the aim of analyzing their response to different structural configurations and mechanical stimuli. The computational component of the research is mainly developed in Matlab and includes the investigation, implementation, and validation of mathematical models capable of simulating and predicting the phenomena observed in vitro. The overall objective is to quantitatively understand the influence of scaffold microstructure and biomechanical stimuli on cell growth and tissue organization.
