Cenni biografici

Melika Malekhosseini is a Specialist in Biofabrication and Characterization of Native Tissues at the Ri.MED Foundation, where she is a member of the Cardiovascular Tissue Engineering group. Her research lies at the intersection of cell biology, biomechanics, and biomaterials, with a particular focus on the development and characterization of bioengineered tissues for cardiovascular and gastrointestinal applications. 

She earned her PhD in Mechanical, Manufacturing, Management and Aerospace Innovation from the University of Palermo in collaboration with the Ri.MED Foundation, after completing both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Biotechnology. During her doctoral research, she focused on the development of a biofabrication process for a bio-hybrid, bi-layer cardiac patch designed to improve cardiac function and mitigate adverse left ventricular remodeling following acute myocardial infarction. She is currently involved in the development of a bio-hybrid esophageal graft aimed at preventing restenosis after inflammatory injury and/or surgical treatment of esophageal carcinoma. 

Attività Scientifica

Throughout her research career, Melika has developed extensive expertise in the characterization of native biological tissues using morphological, topological, histological, and advanced microscopic techniques. Her work includes mechanical characterization of biological tissues and biomaterials to assess their structural and functional properties, as well as the design, fabrication, and optimization of biomaterials for tissue engineering applications. She has also gained experience in the development of drug-loaded microparticles for controlled drug delivery, including the evaluation and optimization of release kinetics through material and formulation design. 

In addition, she has extensive experience in designing and conducting in vitro cell culture studies to investigate cell–material interactions, biocompatibility, and biological responses, contributing to the preclinical evaluation of tissue-engineered constructs and advanced biomaterials.
