21 November 2024

Palermo, November, 21th 2024 – Giulio Superti-Furga, scientific director and future director of the 𝐑𝐢.𝐌𝐄𝐃 research center under construction in Carini, is the “innovator of the year” in Sicily for 2024. The recognition was annunced this morning during the “Sicily Innovation Award” in Palermo, where entrepreneurs, investors and startuppers gathered for a intense day of discussion and networking.

Giulio Superti-Furga, scientific director of the CeMM and scientific director of the 𝐑𝐢.𝐌𝐄𝐃 Foundation, was selected for his extraordinary contribution to the progress of molecular biology and his innovative vision of the future of clinical research, also for the impact that 𝐑𝐢.𝐌𝐄𝐃 research center will soon have for Sicily. Superti explains his vision it in the video interview edited by the journalist Nino Amadore, who reached him in Carini, at the construction site of the new 𝐑𝐢.𝐌𝐄𝐃 center.

According to Superti-Furga, the key to medical-scientific progress lies in the ability to understand and improve the interaction between environmental factors and human biology, in order to promote more integrated and sustainable health: “To understand the medicine of the future, we must contextualize the research in the environment in which we live, following a One Health perspective. Sicily, the historical and geographical center of the Mediterranean, offers a unique cultural, genetic and naturalistic wealth and is therefore the ideal place to conduct scientific studies that include the interaction between human health and the environment. The current attention that this region is receiving, is justified by the cultural depth that makes it suitable to be a hub of innovation”.

Superti-Furga gave a message to all Sicilian innovators: “The important thing is not to be afraid of the future, but to embrace it”. Emanuele Insinna, General Secretary of the 𝐑𝐢.𝐌𝐄𝐃 Foundation, was called to recive the award on behalf of Superti-Furga, who is chairing a meeting in Copenhagen today.

The Sicilian Innovation Award, promoted by the Sicilian Region – Department of Productive Activities and organized by Digitrend, confirms to be a strategic event to enhance the excellence of the island and to promote an entrepreneurial ecosystem oriented towards innovation and sustainable development.
